Berlin-based DnB crew Subdivision Media are back with a slick slice of technology on their Subsistenz imprint. Featuring Machine Code, The Sect and Counterstrike - the 4 track 'Barebones EP' delivers exactly the kind of forward-thinking DnB that you might expect from a crew that represent the backbone of the Neurotechnic sound.
Machine Code bring 2 tracks to the table in the form of 'This Is' and the titular 'Barebones' track. 'This Is' finds Machine Code on friendly form, bringing with it a Techy, yet shiny spirit - with a distinctive vocoded vocal that resonates with the robotic machine-llike synth elements and pleasantly rounded and talkative bleeps. 'Barebones' takes a more angular approach, with a more typically DnB syncopated but solid beat against a synth line that gives the impression of a grouchy heavy-duty laser tearing metal to pieces on an assembly line - definitely a tune to get people stomping to.
'TXL' sees Machine Code and The Sect joining forces to maximum effect, and is a personal highlight on the EP. Tearing amens bring a more natural element to the table, against a backdrop of the kinds of lushious pads and soundscapes rich in sonic depth that Machine Code excel at. After a delightfully ethereal breakdown, the 2nd drop sees the track proceed to a more punishing technical form - unleashing its arsenal of breaks and circular Techno vibe to the full.
The collaboration with 'Counterstrike' in 'Psychosis' pulls no punches, getting straight down to business in the first drop. Angrily buzzing synths are penetrated by steppy, yet punchy kicks. One for the early morning dance.
This EP is the first of a slew of releases coming from the Berlin camp in the next 6 months - with Machine Code's 'STEMS' collaboration LP, and a futher solo LP slated for later this year, as well as plenty of new material from The Sect. It's going to be a busy Autumn // Winter, so now is the right time to secure bookings for your event if you want to be sure of getting the date you want...
